The History of Calletanian

When I speak of myself as the oldest of my kind, that is merely an assumption, for I am quite sure that somewhere in the world there is one who is older than I. There is one who has lived as long as I can remember, he alone may be elder of myself, but there is no guarantee that he is of the Miza'har as I am.

I have assumed the role of a chronicler of history, it is something I have done for aeons now, it simply came naturally. When one wishes to know something of the past, they come to me. When one wishes to know some random piece of knowledge, some skill, some bit of intelligent thought, one goes to Calletanian.

Calletanian is far and away the brightest and most intelligent being I have ever met in my travels, and his company is something that I share far too infrequently in days of late. Many a day did I sit by his side simply listening to him speak his thoughts out loud, and quite random are his thoughts. He is well versed in all matters magical, political, strategic, scientific, and most of all the culinary arts. Never before in all my days have I seen someone who enjoys food as much as my friend Calletanian, he simply redefines the word gourmet.

There are many things in the Realms which I know one of my kind was the driving force behind, but on many an occasion, it was Calletanian's hand nudging someone this way or that, giving advice and his wisdom to those who would ask for it. Oddly, Calletanian has no sense of good or evil in his being, he is simply himself. He shares what he knows with whomever asks of him of my kind, and on occasion even an elf or human or other's of his "children" as he likes to call them. Even Thryn in his mad pursuit of power was occasionally seen sitting next to Calletanian soaking up anything that might be of use in his insane attempt at world conquest. Calletanian cares not for how knowledge is used, simply that it is learned and handed down to others who wish to learn it as well.

I have truly lost count at the number of things which Calletanian has had a hand in teaching to the world, his breadth of knowledge is so great. Some things do stick in my mind (and in my side) that he has directly worked on with others to develop, such as most things alchemical. Alchemists greatly amuse Calletanian, so he does his best to create things for them to use, such as popcorn as a weapon. When he first showed this to me I will admit, I laughed long and hard, and then he promptly singed my eyebrows off and I stopped laughing. Calletanian is a master craftsman, how he remembers all of the intricacies of his work, I shall truly never know. But as long as he remembers how to make a baldric not look like a hauberk, and how to enamel which one to get a certain color is his business, and those that he teaches, not mine, for it is far too confusing.

I have noticed something greatly amusing about the old man as time goes on. He shares his knowledge with others, but he makes them earn his wisdom, it does not come freely, unless one has a great deal of time to sit and listen to him ramble, and a long time for him is longer than most humans and their children are capable of living combined. If one has the urge to learn from him, he is willing to share if he feels that one is worthy, it is proving it to him that is the challenge, for he has seen much in his years, probably more than even myself, probably more than nearly anyone.

I spent many years doing minor things for Calletanian while learning from him, and I feel that he must have grown quite spoiled from this, because ever since he has had a long string of servants to do his bidding. While most of them have been of elven decent, there has been an occasional troll or ogre willing to do the things he needs. Unfortunately for most, they are scared off by the mere sight of old Calletanian, something which amuses him greatly, and to be honest, I think he goes out of his way to look menacing which I find quite funny for he is as passive as they come. Calletanian is odd that way, he won't hurt a fly, and even a majority of his food is prepared magically as to not spare a life in the process of filling his belly. It is two things that most would simply never put together, pacifism and a dragon, it is simply just not natural...
